Castlebay
The island's main harbour and biggest settlement, Castlebay will be your first port of call if you arrive on the big Calmac ferry from Oban or Lochboisdale.
Here you'll find the island's main shops and services together with some great bars, cafés, restaurants and hotels. It'll be your hopping-off point for a visit to Kisimul too.
On Castlebay's main street which runs up from the pier to Castlebay Square, you'll find a post office and a bank with a cash machine. At 'The Butchers' you can buy sweets, groceries, petrol, the daily papers (if the plane has landed), and believe it or not, even good local meat. You'll also find a doctor and pharmacy on the street, and Cafe Kisimul which specialises in Indian dishes made with good local ingredients. In the square is a general store known as the 'Top Shop' and Castlebay's Community Hall where many a fine celidh takes place.
Castlebay is home to the Craigard Hotel, the Castlebay Bar and the Castlebay Hotel. Both hotels serve meals to non-residents, and there's also a little open-air cafe at the Hebridean Toffee and Gift Shop. On the western edge of Castlebay, you'll find a Co-op supermarket which is open later than the shops on the street.
